Type of Fabric Light-weight denim, canvas, twill, corduroy (upholstry material may be used but no drapery material)
Size of Fabric Cut sturdy fabric into rectangle 38"L X 17"W.
Cut two pieces of fabric 2" X 4" for two loops.
Drawstring Cut two sturdy 2 yard cords (total 4 yards for drawstring).

These drawstring bookbags give children the opportunity to go to school.

Book Bags Directions

  1. Fold the edge of larg fabric 1/2" in on all sides and stitch a narrow hem the entire way around.

  2. Fold down 1 1/2" at each short end and stitch to form a casing for the drawstring. (Stitch close to folded end a well as the bottom of the casing.)

  3. To make loops: Fold in half lengthwise, then fold each cut edge into the center fold. Stitch lengthwise.


  4. Fold bag in half with wrong sides of material together. Insert a loop on each side between the two layers at the bottom of the bag so they will be sewn into the seam. Stitch along outside from casing seam to bottom fold.

Include the following items in each Bookbag:

  • lace.jpg Four 70-sheet notebooks of wide - or college-ruled paper approximately 8" X 10 1/2" - no loose-leaf paper
  • lace.jpg One 30-centimeter ruler, or a ruler with centimeters on one side and inches on the other
  • lace.jpg One pencil sharpener
  • lace.jpg One blunt scissors (safety scissors with embedded steel blades work well)
  • lace.jpg Five unsharpened #2 pencils with erasers; secure together with a rubber band
  • lace.jpg Five black or blue ballpoint pens (no gel ink); secure together with a rubber band
  • lace.jpg One box of 16 or 24 crayons
  • lace.jpg One 2 1/2" eraser
